Herkimer Diamond may have the word Diamond in its name but it is not a Diamond. It is double terminated quartz crystal. Due to the Diamond-like clarity and faceting, it is given the term Diamond.
Herkimer Diamond is mainly found in the Herkimer Country, New York in the United States and is named after it. This crystal was first discovered in the Mohawk River valley during the late 18th century.
Herkimer Diamonds are also mined in China, Germany, England and Canada, but the amount of gemstone produced here is comparatively very less. This quartz can be found in various parts of the world but only the ones mined in Herkimer County is given the name Herkimer Diamond.
